The project will last three years and a half (July 2023 to December 2026) and has an overall budget of 1.110.605,44 €, of which the European Union finances 90% (999.544,89 €). It has three specific objectives:
1) Improving the geographical coverage and the overall quality of the bird-related data collected in Europe by increasing participation, data collection and use of more structured data collection protocols, particularly in SE and E Europe.
2) Adding all the bird species recorded in Europe to the EBP data flow, fully using the EBP data standard and updating the EBP viewer accordingly.
3) Producing two demonstrative outputs that showcase how the improved capabilities of the EBP project could be applied to help implement key EU Biodiversity Strategy goals.
The first two objectives will be accomplished by improving the geographical coverage and the overall quantity of the data collected by the EBP project, particularly in SE and E Europe, and extending the taxonomic coverage of the EBP to cover all bird species recorded in the continent. Moreover, to improve data quality, we will promote the use of more structured data collection protocols (e.g. complete lists), boost participation in the International Census Plots project (ICP) in SE and E Europe, and enrich the data stored in the EBP databank by using the EBP data standard to properly identify and characterize the data collected using specific or more standardized protocols.
To showcase the improved capabilities of the EBP project, we will produce an assessment of the overall adequacy of the Natura 2000 network for the protection of terrestrial migratory bird species outside the breeding season and improve the LIVE EBBA2 concept developed by the EUROPABON project to produce maps of change, distribution and probability of occurrence for the breeding season for a set of farmland bird species combing EBP and PECBMS data from the period 2018-2025.
The project work plan comprises 13 different Work Packages (WP) grouped into five key areas.
