For the first time, the European Union have awarded a prize for the outstanding citizen science project https://ars.electronica.art/citizenscience/en/. The EBCC received an Honorary Mention in this competition of various European citizen science projects.
As the initiative declares, ‘the European Union’s new Citizen Science Prize honours, presents and supports outstanding projects whose social and political impact advances the further development of a pluralistic, inclusive and sustainable society in Europe.’ The winners of the three main awards (Grand Prize, Diversity & Collaboration Award and Digital Communities Award) were announced on 23rd April, together with 27 projects selected for an Honorary Mention https://ars.electronica.art/citizenscience/en/winners/. The jury selected the European Bird Census Council (EBCC) for an Honorary Mention after considering our three main projects, EuroBirdPortal, European Breeding Bird Atlas 2 and the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme.
We are happy that the EBCC approach based on standardised data collection, analyses and publication of scientific papers was awarded among the great variety of other projects. This confirms that traditional ways of engaging amateur ornithologists and birdwatchers still have their role in modern societies and research. It also acknowledges our success in building networks of citizens collaborating across borders all across the continent.
